Mental Health Evaluations for Personal Injury & Legal Cases

When you've been hurt in an accident, an assault, or by someone else's carelessness, the effects don't always stop with physical injuries. Nightmares, panic, new fears, trouble sleeping, or no longer being able to work can be just as real — and just as important to your case. We're here to help you understand what you're going through and put it into words that attorneys, insurers, and courts can understand.

You deserve to have the full impact of what happened to you understood.

When Someone Else's Actions Leave Lasting Effects

Many of the people we see never expected to need help like this. They were driving to work, doing their job, walking into a store, or trusting someone they shouldn't have had to worry about — and then something happened that wasn't their fault. We often help people after:

Afterward, it's common to notice things like:

If this sounds familiar, you're not overreacting, and you're not alone.

A Clear, Professional Diagnosis

Symptoms like these often go undiagnosed, especially when the focus has been on physical injuries. Our licensed clinical social workers can evaluate what you're experiencing and, when it is clinically indicated, provide a formal diagnosis of conditions that commonly follow traumatic or stressful events, including:

PTSD & acute stress

Flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, and feeling on guard after a frightening event.

Panic disorder

Sudden, intense waves of fear, often with a racing heart, shortness of breath, or dizziness.

Specific phobias

New, disabling fears, such as of driving, riding in a car, dogs, or returning to where it happened.

Depression

Including depression that follows an injury, the loss of work or income, or the loss of someone important.

Anxiety & adjustment disorders

Ongoing worry, tension, or difficulty coping with how life has changed.

A diagnosis is an important starting point, but it doesn't tell the whole story. That's why we also document how your symptoms affect your everyday life.

What Your Evaluation Can Cover

When clinically supported, the evaluation and written summary can address:

Telling Your Story Clearly

We'll take the time to understand how you were doing before the event, when your symptoms began, and how they've changed since. We document that timeline carefully and honestly, so the people reviewing your case can see what you've been living with.

Careful, honest documentation is what makes an evaluation credible. We describe what the clinical information supports, and we leave questions of legal fault to the legal process. That's how your documentation carries the most weight.

What to Expect

Reach out. You or your attorney can call or contact us. We'll have a short, no-pressure conversation about what's going on and make sure we're the right fit before anything is scheduled.
Share what's helpful. If you have an attorney, they may send specific questions and relevant records. You don't need to have everything gathered to get started.
Clear fees, upfront. We confirm the evaluation fee and any expected additional work with you in writing before we begin, so there are no surprises.
Your evaluation. You'll meet with a clinician in person at our Raleigh office. We move at your pace — talking about hard experiences is never easy, and we'll make it as comfortable as we can.
Your written summary. We provide a clear, professionally written summary that you and your attorney can use.
Continued support. If your attorney needs follow-up, we can help. And if you'd like support healing from what happened, our therapists are here for that too.

Our Role in Your Case

How we help

  • Listen carefully and take your experience seriously
  • Assess and, when indicated, diagnose your symptoms
  • Document how your life has been affected
  • Describe your treatment needs and recommendations
  • Communicate clearly with your attorney when needed

What's decided by the legal process

  • Who is legally at fault or liable
  • The value of a claim or settlement
  • The credibility of the people involved

Our evaluations are clinical social work assessments. We don't provide psychological or neuropsychological testing, medical examinations, or medical opinions — if your case needs those, we'll let you and your attorney know.

Honest Documentation You Can Trust

We'll take your experience seriously and describe it accurately and thoroughly. Our findings are based on the clinical evaluation, not on who requests or pays for it, and that independence is exactly what gives your documentation weight with attorneys, insurers, and courts.

Help Healing, Too

An evaluation can help your case, but you also deserve to feel better. Our trauma-focused therapists offer approaches such as EMDR, somatic therapy, and trauma therapy, with immediate openings and most major insurance plans accepted. Meet our therapists →

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you diagnose PTSD, anxiety, or depression?

Yes. Licensed clinical social workers in North Carolina can assess and diagnose mental-health conditions. When it is clinically indicated by your evaluation, we can provide a diagnosis such as PTSD, panic disorder, a specific phobia, or depression, and explain how those symptoms affect your daily life.

I don't have a lawyer yet. Can I still come in?

Absolutely. Many people come to us first because they're struggling and want to understand what they're experiencing. Your evaluation and documentation can be shared with an attorney later if you decide to pursue a case.

My attorney asked me to get an evaluation. What should I do?

You or your attorney can call or contact us. We'll have a short conversation about what's going on and what your attorney needs, and make sure it's something we can help with before anything is scheduled or paid for.

Will you say the accident or incident caused my symptoms?

We'll carefully document your story: how you were doing before, what happened, when your symptoms began, and how they've affected you since. We describe what the clinical information supports. Questions of legal fault and responsibility are decided through the legal process, and honest, careful documentation is what gives your evaluation credibility there.

Can you talk with my attorney or take part in a deposition?

Yes, when appropriate. Additional consultation, record review, attorney communication, or deposition participation is billed at $180 per hour, and we'll always discuss it with you in advance.

Is the evaluation covered by insurance?

Evaluations and documentation for legal matters are cash-pay, and fees are confirmed with you before we begin. If you'd like ongoing therapy to help you heal, our clinicians accept most major insurance plans.

Do you provide psychological testing?

No. Our evaluations are clinical social work assessments. We do not provide psychological or neuropsychological testing, medical examinations, or medical opinions. If your case needs those, we can let you and your attorney know.
